Born in Warsaw, February 3, 1953 / Graduated at the Warsaw University in Polish language and literature 1976 / Doctor in humanities at the Institute for Literary Research, Polish Academy of Sciences, 1976-1980 / In 1980 he co-organized „Solidarity” in the Polish Academy of Sciences. After declaration of the martial law in December 1981, involved in the clandestine activities of the democratic opposition against Communist rule (editor of the underground Warsaw weekly newspaper „Wola”) / Arrested, tried for political „crimes”, and acquitted in 1982 / He continued underground opposition activities till 1989 / In 1989-1993 managing editor and author at the „Nowy Dziennik” („Polish Daily News”) in New York / Since 1993 editor and head of Political Desk at the „Gazeta Wyborcza” / Since 1998 editor and head of the Weekend Essays and Comments section / Since 2001 deputy editor-in-chief.
